Day 8 - To Porto de Muge

To Santiago de Compostela: 540 km

Walked today: 19.1 km

Total walked: 101.4 km

Up at 5:15 am on the road shortly after 6 am. We crossed the train tracks a followed a quiet asphalt road.  All alone for over 10 km.
We stopped for a rest at Reguengo, the cafe had WiFi.  Finally we could check email and post the blog from yesterday.

The Portuguese pilgrims are long gone. They have to be on Fatima by Wednesday to get to the feast of Our Lady.  But the Dutch couple caught up with us.  Burt and Carolyne and a bit later a pleasant younger man, also Dutch, Rudy.

From there it was only 4 more km to Porto de Muge, our objective for today. 16 km completed by 12:30 pm.

Yesterday I called the albergue of Santarem and Mario said he would pick us at 3 pm.  We sat at a cafe to have a drink and a sandwich.  We were there when a pilgrim arrived, Mathias from Finland.  He decided to join us so now the three of us at at Mario's place in Santarem.

Santar was founded by the Romans around the II century.  It was in the time of the Visigoths that it took its present name, as we mentioned before, from Santa Iris, Saint Irene. It is known for its large number of Portuguese Gothic churches.

The pictures below show an example of the roads we traveled today, sunrise and an ostrich farm.

Since we are in Santarem we ask St. Iria to pray for us.
